My Thoughts

🌟 I've heard so many good things about The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but I never felt compelled to grab a copy until someone gifted me one (thank you to that kind soul!). The book lingered in my mind for days after I finished it.

The story follows Charlie's journey through adolescence, his struggles with past abuse, and the poignant moments of navigating friendships and loss. It resonated so deeply that I found myself reading it over and over.

What stood out to me was the raw, emotional exploration of how loneliness and ridicule can shape a person. Charlie's loneliness reminded me of times I took people for granted or treated them poorly. It hit me hard, especially when I reflected on my own relationships, including the giver of this book. The story also shed light on the importance of self-love and self-respect. Sometimes, we are our own worst critics—quick to ridicule ourselves while despising others for doing the same.

✨ Two characters, Patrick and Sam, gave Charlie a sense of belonging, and their friendship warmed my heart. Despite their imperfections, they provided Charlie with comfort and guidance when he needed it the most. One line that struck me was Charlie's description of his parents: "Sometimes, my dad calls her beautiful, but she cannot hear him." It reminded me of how often we overlook our own worth.

The themes of self-acceptance and forgiveness resonated throughout the book. Every Charlie out there has a voice, and this story gives that voice to life.

Favourite Lines & Reflections

πŸ”Ή Patrick to Charlie (about women):
"They just like somebody that can give them a purpose."
This made me reflect on how some people seek their worth in others. True purpose comes from within—what God has placed in our hearts to accomplish during our time on Earth.

πŸ”Ή Bill to Charlie (on love):
"We accept the love we think we deserve."
This simple yet profound line taught me that enduring abuse is not love. Abuse is abnormal use, and it’s not what we deserve. True love doesn’t harm but uplifts and nurtures.

πŸ”Ή Charlie’s Dad (on excuses):
"Not everyone has a sob story, Charlie, and even if they do, it’s no excuse."
This hit home on a deeply personal level. Life is tough, but hardships don’t justify hurting others or making poor choices.
